Prélude en Berry : L'Amour Médecin

Lucinde loves Clitandre, but Sganarelle, the father, is not oblivious to his own interests and intends to "keep his property and his daughter for himself".
With the help of Lisette, the housekeeper, the two lovers achieve their goal under Sganarelle’s watchful eye: Clitandre, disguised as a doctor, pretends to cure Lucinde of her desire by proposing marriage. Accomplice to this stratagem, she accepts, and as soon as the contract is signed, the father is duped: “You thought you were playing a game which becomes a truth”.
Along the way, this intrigue enables Molière to settle scores, not only with incompetent and greedy doctors, but also to broaden his criticism of all those who think only of “taking men by their weak side, to make some profit out of them”.
