THE GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF TALCY: A COUNTRY HOUSE WITH A “FRUITY” CHARM

The gardens of the Château of Talcy lie at the foot of a magnificent Renaissance house, once owned by Bernard Salviati, an Italian banker whose daughter Cassandre inspired Ronsard’s famous “Mignonne, allons voir si la rose…”. Near the château, the creation of a new orchard revived the estate’s 19th-century agricultural past.

APPLE AND PEAR TREES: THE STARS OF THE GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF TALCY!

This large collection orchard is mainly dedicated to heirloom varieties of apple and pear trees. It is also an opportunity to discover the many different training techniques used for these fruit trees and their code-like names, such as palmettes, four and five branches, oblique, Cossonnet, double U, trident, croisillons, goblet, open book, simple or double cordon… Their different shapes are like beautiful plant-based works of art!

Within this 7-hectare orchard, the gardeners constantly prepare for the arrival of new varieties by planting young specimens to obtain new forms.

As you will discover, there are many advantages to training trees, such as saving space and facilitating care and harvest. There’s plenty of inspiration to give you ideas for your own garden!

THE VERY FRUCTIFEROUS ORCHARD OF THE GARDENS OF THE CHÂTEAU OF TALCY

The agricultural legacy of the estate has been well preserved! Other trees and bushes have been planted alongside the heirloom apple and pear trees and the profusion of fruits is mouth-watering, with cherries, plums, medlars, walnuts, blackcurrants, redcurrants and even grapes reviving the flavours of the past.
